Naughty Lucky!!
It's the same as all animals: let her get on with things herself but be there so you can help if things don't work quite as they should.
She'll start nesting when she's ready: try and encourage her to nest somewhere quiet... good luck with that!
We always used a very large wooden box, and the front was hinged so that when the pups were up and walking, we could let the ramp down so they could get in and out without being disturbed by losing their familiar bed. (it also means that when you don't want them out and about, they have to stay put!!)
Newspaper is one of the best things to put down for the birthing: you can keep topping it up and easily remove the lot when she's done. It's also great for the pups as you can remove the top couple of layers and top up as and when you need to.
Hi Guru Jo!
Thanks for the info, I am dreading it really, after her accident last year, it worries me that she is in pup...but too late now!! I just hope it all goes ok, does she drop before birth? or is there any signs of imminent birthing??...Wish I knew the dates better, could work it out a bit!
It seems different to the pigs giving birth somehow, as Lucky is so in your face and dependent, that she doesn't really seem like a pet, more like a needy child...constantly!
Try this site:
http://www.cockerspanielstuddogs.co.uk/pregnant-whelping-bitch-care.asp
It even gives details of how to build your own whelping box (as I now know they are called!)
As you know, animals know what to do: just be prepared for any eventuality and sit back and wait... and wait... and wait!
We expect lots of photos and updates!
